How to Install a Car Battery

Auto Mechanic Replacing Car Battery

Some Neptune Beach drivers ask, “Where can I get car battery installation near me?”. Others want to do it on their own. But the process for how to install a car battery is a bit more complicated than changing out the AAA’s on your TV remote. The service center at Honda of the Avenues covers how to install a car battery below.

How To Install a Car Battery: Supplies

If you’ve decided to learn how to install a car battery, the first thing to do is get the right equipment. You may already have a battery you got from our Orange Park-area parts center, but you’ll also need a few other essential supplies to ensure an effective and safe battery installation process:

  • Wrenches
  • Battery Cleaning Solution
  • Wire Brush
  • Pliers
  • Anti-Corrosion Spray

If you don’t have those tools and are wondering, “What about car battery installation near me?” in St. Augustine, schedule service at Honda of the Avenues.

How to Install a Car Battery: Step-by-Step

  • Engine off: turn the engine off and pull the parking brake.
  • Loosen the nuts: starting with the black (negative) cable, use a wrench to loosen the nut. There are specific wrenches made for car batteries that can help with this.
  • Pull the cable off, but don’t use a screwdriver or tool to pry it off if it’s stuck — that could damage the battery.
  • Repeat the above two steps with the red (positive) terminal.
  • Loosen the battery hold-down clamps to fully free the battery and get ready to remove it.
  • Remove the battery using both hands (it’s heavy!). You don’t want to drop it and cause an unsafe leak.
  • Clean off corrosion in the battery dock with your battery cleaner or a baking soda/water solution. Also, use a wire brush to clean off the battery cables and connectors.
  • Place the new battery in the tray and tighten the hold-down clamps. Spray the positive and negative terminals with your anti-corrosion solution to extend your battery life.
  • Attach the cables, red one first, and secure them. Shake the battery to make sure it’s tightly secure in the terminal.
